The Soccer World Cup of Spain 1982 was the first with 24 teams.

To reach the final match Italy had to leave in its way, in the second round, the defending champion Argentina and one of the top candidates Brazil.

Germany suffered with France in the semifinals. After a 1-1 tie in 90 minutes, France made to goals in extra time to put the score 3-1 but Germany recovered in time to tie the game and win the first penalty definition of the history.

In the final match Italy defeated Germany 3-1 and Paolo Rossi, who made one the goals became the top scorer of the tournament.
